Pool Deck Installation in Austin, TX

Austin Deck Builders – Design & Installation builds pool decks across Austin: decks around above-ground pools, decks beside in-ground pools, and decks over pools that aren’t used anymore. A pool deck takes water, chlorine and bare feet every summer, so we build it for that from the footings up.

Call (512) 354-7633 or ask for a free pool deck estimate. We’ll look at the pool, the yard around it and how you’d like to get in and out, then talk through the options.

Wood deck beside a backyard pool in Austin, TX

Most of the pool decks we build are for above-ground pools. The deck sits near the height of the pool’s rim, so you can step from the deck straight into the water instead of climbing a ladder from the grass. There are three common layouts:

  • Full wrap: the deck goes all the way around the pool
  • Partial wrap: the deck covers one side or half the pool, leaving the rest open
  • Platform with steps: a smaller deck at the pool’s edge with stairs down to the yard

Most above-ground pools stand around four feet tall, so the deck sits well above 30 inches off the ground and needs railings and solid stairs. The deck shouldn’t rest on the pool wall. It needs its own posts and footings, so the pool can move and be serviced without the deck in the way.

Decks Beside In-Ground Pools

We also build decks next to in-ground pools: a wood or composite deck between the house and the pool, a raised deck that looks over the water, or a lounging area on one side. If your yard slopes away from the pool, our sloped yard decks page shows how a deck can step down in levels.

Decks Over an Old Pool

If you’ve got a pool you don’t use anymore, we can build a deck over it and turn that space back into usable yard. It’s a bigger job than a regular deck, because the pool has to be dealt with first and the deck needs firm support. Our deck over pool guide covers the different ways it can be done.

Built for Water, Not Just Near It

We see the yard before we quote the deck, and around a pool we’re watching where the water goes. Splash-out, rain and runoff all have to drain away from the pool and the house, not pool under the deck.

  • Posts sit on concrete, never in the dirt, so termites and standing water don’t reach the wood
  • Boards are spaced so water drains through instead of sitting on top
  • Footings sit on firm ground, not soil that’s been soaked by the pool

That’s what makes a pool deck built for every Austin season, not just for the first summer.

Boards That Work by a Pool

The boards around a pool get wet, splashed with chlorine and walked on barefoot. We install:

  • Composite: Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon boards handle water well and don’t need staining
  • PVC and vinyl decking: water-resistant and easy to rinse off
  • Wood: cedar, redwood, pressure-treated pine and hardwoods like ipe, sealed to keep water out

Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot than dark ones in the Texas sun, and textured boards give better grip when they’re wet. We’ll help you pick at the estimate.

Gates, Railings and Safety

A pool deck shouldn’t be an easy way into the pool for kids or pets. We plan the stairs, railings and gates so access to the water is where you want it, and we’ll check the City’s pool barrier rules for your setup at the permit stage.

Permits for Pool Decks

Pool decks are often more than 30 inches off the ground, and a deck that’s part of a pool’s barrier has its own rules, so many pool decks need a City of Austin permit. We coordinate permits through third-party permit partners. Our pool deck permits guide explains when one applies.

Keeping a Pool Deck in Shape

Wood decks by a pool need a fresh finish more often than most. We handle pool deck refinishing, clean composite decks, and take care of pool deck repair when boards, stairs or railings work loose.

A yearly pool deck inspection is free. If an old pool deck is past fixing, we also handle pool deck replacement.
