What Austin Sun Does to a Wood Deck
Austin sun is hard on wood. UV breaks down the surface fibers and turns cedar, pine and redwood gray, and summer heat dries boards out until they check and split. Then a spring storm soaks them, and the cycle starts again.
A good finish slows all of that down. It blocks UV, sheds water and keeps the wood from drying out so fast. Left bare, even a well-built deck weathers years ahead of schedule. A finished deck is one that’s built for every Austin season.
How We Stain a Deck
1. Inspect and Repair
We see the yard before we quote the deck, and with staining we check every board first. Loose boards get refastened, popped screws reset, and rotted boards replaced. Bigger problems go to our loose board repairs crew before any finish goes on.
2. Clean and Strip
We sweep the deck, then clean it with a deck cleaner to lift dirt, mildew and graying. If an old finish is peeling or failing, we strip it so the new coat bonds to wood, not to old stain.
3. Brighten and Rinse
A wood brightener follows the cleaner. It neutralizes the cleaner and brings back the wood’s natural color, especially on cedar and redwood. Then we rinse at a pressure that cleans without tearing up the grain.
4. Dry and Sand
The wood has to dry fully before anything goes on. We sand rough spots and raised grain so the finish goes on even and the deck is smooth underfoot.
5. Stain, Seal or Paint
We apply the finish in the right conditions: on dry wood, with no rain coming and not on boards baking in the midday sun. We cover the boards, rails, stairs and the end grain, where water gets in first.
6. Final Walkthrough
We walk the finished deck with you once it’s dry. Our work carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty.
Stain, Sealer or Oil: What Each Wood Needs
- Cedar and redwood: a semi-transparent stain keeps the grain visible and adds UV protection; a clear sealer keeps the natural look but needs refreshing sooner
- Pressure-treated pine: a semi-transparent or solid stain evens out the color and protects the surface from sun and water
- Ipe and other hardwoods: these dense woods take a penetrating oil made for hardwoods, not a regular stain, and look best when oiled on schedule
- Modified wood: we follow the maker’s finish guidance for the product on your deck

Deck Painting
We paint decks too. Paint gives a solid, even color and covers older boards that have been stained many times. It’s a good fit for railings, skirting, stair risers and older pressure-treated decks. On the walking surface, a solid stain usually holds up better than paint under Austin sun and foot traffic, and we’ll talk you through both.
Deck Sealing, Waterproofing and Weatherproofing
Sealing is what keeps water out. A clear or tinted sealer soaks into the wood and makes water bead up instead of soaking in, which is what people usually mean by deck waterproofing or weatherproofing. Many deck stains seal as well, so one finish can do both jobs.

When Staining Is Not Enough
If boards are soft, the framing has rotted or the deck moves when you walk on it, a new finish won’t fix it. In that case, failing deck replacement may make more sense, and we’ll tell you honestly which side your deck is on.
