Rooftop Deck Installation in Austin, TX
Austin Deck Builders – Design & Installation builds rooftop decks for Austin homes and commercial buildings. A flat roof can become a sitting area, a spot to watch the sunset over the city, or extra space for guests, and we build the deck that turns it into one.
Call (512) 354-7633 or ask for a free rooftop deck estimate. We’ll come out, look at the roof and how you get to it, and talk through what a deck up there would take.

ToggleBefore Anything Goes on the Roof
A rooftop deck isn’t like a deck in the yard. It sits on a roof that already has a job to do: keep water out of the building. Before a rooftop deck is built, a few things have to be settled:
- Can the roof carry it? The roof has to be confirmed to hold the weight of the deck, the furniture and the people on it
- What shape is the roof in? A roof that’s near the end of its life should be dealt with before a deck covers it
- How will the roof stay protected? The deck can’t damage the roof surface or block the way water drains off
We see the yard before we quote the deck, and on a rooftop job the roof is the yard. We’ll look at it with you at the site visit and tell you plainly what needs to be checked or confirmed before we can build.
Planning Around Drainage
Water has to keep moving off a roof once a deck is on it. Rain needs a clear path to the drains and scuppers, and the deck shouldn’t trap water, leaves or debris underneath. We plan the deck so those paths stay open and so the areas you’ll need to reach later can still be reached.
Railings and Access
Every rooftop deck needs a guardrail along any open edge. We build railings that match the deck and keep people safe at the roofline. Getting up there matters too, whether it’s a door from an upstairs room, an existing roof access, or new stairs. If the deck connects to a second floor, our second-story deck builds page covers how upper decks and stairs come together.
Boards for Full Sun
A rooftop gets more sun than almost any other spot on the property, with no trees to shade it. We install:
- Composite: Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon
- PVC and vinyl decking
- Wood: cedar, redwood, pressure-treated pine, ipe and other hardwoods, and modified wood
- Aluminum railings and decking
Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot than dark ones. Composite and PVC don’t need staining, and wood up there needs a finish that holds up to full sun. When it’s time, our deck stain and seal service keeps wood boards protected.
Rooftop Decks for Homes and Businesses
We build rooftop decks for homeowners and for commercial buildings, including restaurants, bars and other businesses that want outdoor space on the roof. Commercial rooftops have their own rules for railings, access and how many people the space can hold, so we’ll talk through those at the site visit.
Permits for Rooftop Decks
A rooftop deck sits well above the ground and changes how a roof is used, so it usually needs a City of Austin building permit. We coordinate permits through third-party permit partners. Our rooftop deck permits guide explains how permits work for decks in Austin.
Already Have a Rooftop Deck?
Rooftop decks take full sun and every storm. If yours has loose boards, a wobbly railing or soft spots, an existing deck inspection is free, and we’ll tell you what we find. If your project is a regular deck in the yard instead, see our ground-level deck installation page.
Why Owners Call Us

Frequently Asked Questions
Can any roof have a deck on it?
Not always. The roof has to be confirmed to carry the weight of the deck and the people on it, and it has to be in good shape first. We’ll look at it with you at the site visit and tell you what needs checking.
Do you build rooftop decks for businesses?
Yes. We build rooftop decks for homes and for commercial buildings, including restaurants and bars.
Do rooftop decks need railings?
Yes. Any open edge of a rooftop deck needs a guardrail. We build the railings as part of the deck.
What decking works best on a roof?
Composite and PVC hold up well in full sun and don’t need staining. Wood works too with a finish that’s kept up. Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot.
Does a rooftop deck need a permit in Austin?
Usually, yes. We coordinate permits through third-party permit partners.
