In 1966, tragedy struck when Charles Whitman opened fire from atop the tower killing 16 people before he was stopped by police officers Ramiro Martinez & Houston McCoy. In 1999, the observation deck reopened after being closed for 33 years following this event – though access remains limited due to safety concerns. Today visitors can go up to the 28th floor, where they will find memorial plaques dedicated to those lost during Whitman’s rampage as well as breathtaking views overlooking Downtown Austin and beyond!
